The Tophats Squadron Flies in IL-2 Stumovik & IL-2 Forgotten Battles, and so should you! Here's why:

Main Features
The IL-2 Sturmovik flight simulator highlights the legendary Red Army ground attack aircraft of the same name, and the historical air combat that took place on the Eastern front during WWII.
Called "flying tank" by the Russians and "the Black Death" by the Germans, the IL-2s proved so much their superiority over the German Messerschmitts and Junkers that Stalin is said to have remarked that ”the IL-2 is as important for the Red Army as air and bread!”

Fly 31 types of Russian, German and American planes. See them in different camouflage and paint schemes for different times of the year (at least summer and winter). See 40 other types of aircraft engaged in large air battles (with camouflage paint schemes changing from summer to winter)

Play two different multiplayer modes: dog-fighting or cooperative missions across a LAN or the Internet with dedicated servers for online play

Play with up to 32 players in dogfight and 16 players in cooperative missions.  Use custom paint schemes, squadron nose art, numbering on wings, and national

See realistic 3D world environment, including terrain, sky, unique clouds and weather conditions. See exceptionally high quality aircraft and ground unit graphics

See massive air and ground battles between German and Russian airplanes and tanks

Play quick missions using full mission parameter settings. Play different types of single missions. Play campaign missions and track your career. Play new scenarios designed by other players

See realistic smoke, explosions, fire and other special effects (realistic dynamic damage modeling)

Minimum system requirements:
PII 400, 128 Mb RAM, 3D Accelerator.

Recommended system:
PIII 600 or better, 256 Mb RAM, 32 bit 3D accelerator with 32 Mb RAM or better.

Multiplayer

Multiplayer includes two main modes that can be played on a LAN or across the Internet with dedicated servers (you can host your own server in additional to the main, hosted by us or the publisher).
1. Dogfighting will allow up to 32 players depending on connections
2. Cooperative missions will allow up to 16 players depending on connections

Dogfighting
Connect to the server at any time of day or night and go head to head against any of other player online.
The server may be set up several different ways:
A) For the hardcore simmers (adjustable on the server)
B) For the player who wants rapid fire action, arcade style (adjustable on the server with many various)
For Dogfight mode is present two types of servers:
dedicated (hosted by publisher and perhaps, other providers)
hosted by user on home PC connected to Internet.

Cooperative Missions (Teamplay).
This mode is developed for those who like to play in teams in historical scenarios or scenarios created in the mission builder.
Before a team play game, players will need to set the date and time for internet play, for LAN it isn't necessary, when they all will begin the cooperative mission with selected scenario.
There are possible two types of server settings:
a) for hardcore simmers (adjustable on the server)
b) for novice or for those who like arcade style games (adjustable on the server)
Possible various of cooperative missions modes:
team vs. other team.
team vs. AI
team + AI vs. other team + AI. (with various amount of AI friends/enemy for both teams)
6) Player host own cooperative server on the home PC, connected to Internet.

MULTIPLAY/ONLINE PAINT SCHEMES:
Each flyable plane can be unique.  Virtual squadrons may have their original paint schemes with individual numbering. It will be easy to identify friends or foes.
Players are able to select:
1. National markings. Players for countries not present in our list of images can paint new national markings and upload for others to use.
2. Numbers on the fuselage from 00 to 99 plus it is possible to select the color of number.
3. Squadron markings from a list including some historical images and a list of images sent us many virtual squadrons. A player can paint any new emblem (with the correct size and palette) then upload it for others to use.
4. Camouflage from a list that includes some most well-known paint schemes for each flyable plane. In addition, player can paint their own schemes and place any new markings, numbering, etc on the new painted skin.
5. If a players does not download new non-standard (items 1,3,4 above) markings or paint scheme, they will see aircraft with the standard markings (with our standard list, no national markings, no numbering, no squadron markings and with the standard N1 of the camouflage list)

For all modes of the multiplay: All players receive the settings of the server to which they are currently connected during the first seconds of connection to such server. The players can not change them (cheat).  All of players will use the same settings for gameplay.

A SEARCH for SERVERS utility (Created by Publisher*) is included with the release.  Each player will be able to search for all IL-2 servers. In this search program it displays:
- all servers (if options are set for this)
- type of the server (dogfight or cooperative)
- number of players online
- player's callsign (nickname)
- their current Kills/Deaths
- connection quality (ping/lag)
- type of the map (scenario)
- connect to this server without permission of other players or host (unattended server mode)

IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR MULTIPLAY COOPERATIVE MODE:
All single or campaign missions are not available to every player online.  The number of players online is limited.  The is no limit to the number of AI planes in single play (except as limited by the speed of processor)
For two seat aircraft, it is possible to fly two players in one plane, pilot + rear gunner. The rear gunner seat uses a "quake mode" to shoot using the mouse.  You may always fly alone and to switch your position from Pilot to rear gunner (AI will take control of the position you are not controlling).  Switch at any time during your flight from one position to another and back. This feature is currently included for IL-2 two seats models only. If there are additional TWO SEAT aircraft in the form of future add-ons, this feature will be also present for them.  The Ju-87, Ju-88, Pe-2 or Tu-2 are being considered for this type of expansion.  Only one gunner position will be offered in best position for defense (usually on a top of fuselage, behind pilot), other gunner position will be under control of AI.

Mission builder:

This utilizes 2D and 3D tools and is based on the IL-2 engine.  There is a Zoom feature that can expand the 2D map from the full 200 km x 300 km (full screen) to view single 3D object with full screen detail.

User can create their own missions for single or multiplayer cooperative missions. It will be possible to set the area, location of ground forces (troops, tanks, ships, etc) and air forces with all necessary parameters for both sides. Any mission is playable on any PC running IL-2.  Generally, in order to play the mission, one will need only the sim itself. Sometimes the new models of objects or maps from our own add-ons (if used) will need to be downloaded.
The Mission Builder will be module of IL-2 engine, incorporated in a simulator.

3. Escort missions
During 1941-43, IL-2s, equipped with 2x20(or 23)mm guns, 8 or 16 rockets (or deleted rocket rails) with no bombs loaded were used for escorting of fully loaded IL-2 flights. The speed and maneuverability of the IL-2 when it was not loaded with bombs were slightly with the Bf-109E at low altitudes (up to 1.000 m). Such missions should be frequent but they are an interesting diversion from the normal air to ground tasking.

4. Naval attacks
Hunt for naval combat vessels and transports
Hunt for U-boats
Attack naval vessels and installations when they are in port

Fighter missions:

Fighter sweep

FAQ
Why has the game been called IL-2 Sturmovik?

In collaboration with the veteran Russian developer Oleg Maddox and a number of other respected aviation sources, Ubi Soft decided to name the game IL-2 Sturmovik in order to use a word that would be understood internationally, by gamers all around the world. The word "Sturmovik" can be understood and pronounced by people from Eastern Europe to America, Australia to Africa, and lucky people from all of those places will be playing IL-2 Sturmovik! We understand and accept that the name is a derivative of the correct translation, but we wanted to ensure everybody who wanted to say its name could do so comfortably.

Who created Maddox Games? Where do they come from?
Oleg Maddox founded Russia based Maddox Games in 1992 as a specialist developer of simulation games. Recently, Maddox Games joined with Moscow based 1C Company, founded in 1991, as the developer 1C:Maddox Games for IL-2 Sturmovik. Oleg Maddox is the head of the 1C:Maddox Games and the IL-2 Sturmovik project.

What is the minimum PC configuration required to run the game?
Minimum system requirements:
PII 400, 128 MB RAM, 3D Accelerator with 16 MB RAM (voodoo3 at least or equal)
Recommended system:
PIII 600 or better, 256 MB RAM, 32-bit 3D accelerator with 32 MB RAM or better.
Best configurations for full graphics options:
Processor 800 MHz -1,0 GHz or better, 256 MB RAM, GeForce 2 3D accelerator or better.

How many planes are available to fly in IL-2 Sturmovik?
There are 31 planes that can be controlled by the player including nine versions of the IL-2 and five versions of the Messerschmitt Bf-109. You will furthermore encounter more than 40 different AI controlled planes! Every version of each aircraft is modeled so well that you can find many differences between the flight models and performance of each model.

If you are flying a two-seater, can you switch between controlling the pilot and the rear-gunner?
Yes, you can. In single play the other position will be controlled by the computer AI. In multiplay cooperative mode you also may play for the rear gunner position, but in this case you can't switch your position to pilot. So you may start cooperative mission only as pilot or only as gunner.

Will it be possible for two people to share one plane in multiplayer games?
Yes, if you choose a two-seater in multiplayer games you may share it with another player as a pilot and rear-gunner team.

Will it be possible not to fly the aircraft but to develop a career as a rear gunner, yet still feel involved in the campaign?
It's not possible to conduct an entire career as a rear gunner but you can fly full missions as a rear gunner with the AI piloting and attacking your targets.

Will it be possible to configure the loadout of your aircraft?
Yes, it is possible for each flyable plane. In additional there is a feature to configure almost all AI units using our Quick Mission Builder and Full Mission Builder.

Will there be a padlock feature?
Yes there will, but of course if you don't like it you can switch it off.

Will gameplay be set across whole campaigns, or will it be divided into short missions?
There will be single missions as well as Pilot Career mode across six well-known campaigns from early battles on the Eastern Front in 1941 to the last days in 1945.

Is it possible to make new missions and campaign scenarios?
Yes. There'll be a very easy-to-use and at the same time very powerful Mission Builder based on the game's engine itself.

How many players can play IL-2 Sturmovik online?
Up to 32 players can compete in deathmatch/dog-fighting mode, and 16 can fly together in cooperative mode.

Will I have to pay a monthly fee to play the game in multiplay on the Ubisoft.com servers?
No, you buy only the game and the rest is for free.

Can I make my own squad insignia for my plane?
Yes you can.

Can I make my own skins for my plane?
Yes you can. This feature is available for each flyable aircraft, but only for multiplay. Each single plane online may have own camo(skin) and all other players will see your plane with your own skin.

Does the game support voice chat?
Yes.

Will there be rain, snow and other weather effects?
Yes.

Do the tanks have positional armor?
Yes, all planes and other vehicles will have individual damage models, which take this into account.

Do the Soviet aircraft get to upgrade their gun, bomb and rocket calibers to any degree as the war advances?
Those features were upgraded for aircraft throughout the war and so that model WILL be given more loadout options as time pass and newer types are introduced.

Can you record your missions?
Yes, you can do this and watch your best single-play flights again! You also can edit these for the best cinematic view.

Will IL-2 Sturmovik be a hardcore simulation or more of an out-and-out action game?
Our sim will be an authentic and accurate simulation as well as a game for players that like instant action and an easy-to-use flight model! Less experienced gamers can switch off features such as stalls, spins and blackouts, but hardcore gamers can leave them in. There will also be an easy-to-use mission builder with which you can create your own missions and even simple sightseeing flights.

Why aren't there swastikas on the German planes in IL-2 STURMOVIK?
The widespread enthusiasm for flight simulators like IL-2 STURMOVIK is based on a passion for flying, its historical roots and the technology and tradition associated with it, rather than the political background of the game's scenario.
We are aware of the claim that is occasionally made that depicting symbols of Germany's political system during the Third Reich is a documentary necessity in certain contexts. Nevertheless, symbols can also articulate political opinions. Conscious of the historical events of this period, we would like to ensure that IL-2 STURMOVIK does not become a focus for political or ideological discussion. We also want to make it perfectly clear that we have no sympathy whatsoever with the ideology of the Third Reich.

                                                                                                                      INTERVIEW WITH OLEG MADDOX

Can you give us a very quick run-down of your gaming career ?

The company Maddox Games was founded at the end of 1992.
The company has developed on its own, or in cooperation with other companies, more than 40 games and multimedia products for MS-DOS, Windows and Pen Pad platforms. Past titles have included serious music playing facilities, puzzles, simulators, 3D shooters and serious products such as special electronic maps and scientific software tools.
Maddox Games has won multiple prizes and awards in different contests here in Russia.

In 1999 Maddox Games joined forces with the largest Russian Software House -- led by the 1C company-- giving the team a new name, 1C:Maddox Games.

Years spent by our team focusing on research and development produced a good and stable base to move onto making games in various genres from 3D strategy games and vehicle simulators to flight and space simulators, etc.

Can you give us an overview or information on the background of the IL-2 game?

The IL-2 was the main ground attack aircraft of the Soviet Air Force.
There are presently no flight simulators covering the Russian front during WWII.
There are no current simulators of propeller planes that have a "close-to-realistic" flight model.
There are no flight simulators catering for both categories hardcore and beginner players.
There are not many titles in this genre compared with other genres!
So we decided to make IL-2 Sturmovik the best possible title -the best possible for the current industry, and for the foreseeable future. I am talking here about making a really good simulator and a really good game!
We have selected the IL-2 plane as the main "hero" of our sim because it was the most mass-produced military plane of all-time and all nations (even more mass-produced than the Bf-109's wartime and post-war production). To maintain the interest of all sim groups, we've decided to include a number of other fantastic flyable planes - German, Russian and American -- which were all really present on the Russian front in great numbers.
Will the game will be precisely related to the history of the Eastern front during WWII? Will the player take part in dynamic missions, where different outcomes are possible?
Yes, players will be involved in the main great historic battles, including epic confrontations such as Stalingrad and Kursk. The campaign mode is randomly branched, with a lot of dynamic environments and resulting dynamic changes. For example, bridges, houses, etc destroyed in one mission will be similarly destroyed in the following missions (including branched) and may have a result on the player's career.

Can you please tell us what the main differences are between IL-2 and the other flight simulation games?

We tried to accumulate only the best and most popular features of this genre, and then to include only those that can be done well. Throughout the entire course of development (and still now!) I maintain direct contact with the player and simulation communities.

Can you tell us how long the game has been in development?

More than 3 years.

What was your biggest challenge during the development of the game?

The most difficult for me was several things
We lost one guy - Yuri Antonov, who was one of the main developers. He got a bad illness and never returned to us. He was working for us for six years … Now he can't work with a computer, but myself and the rest of the team are still in constant contact with him.
Technical research. This has been 20 percent of all our project work. However to be fair, I've been a personal fan of aviation more than 30 years, so I have a large basic library and knowledge! The hard thing was to implement all our knowledge in one simulator!
Which parts of the game are you currently working on, or will you be working on before release?

Currently we're busy fixing bugs in the beta version. We would like to get final product working everywhere with no problems for users. We also are also working on some future add-ons for IL-2 - new flyable planes and new events and scenarios for Dogfight and Cooperative multiplay!

Have you used feedback from historians to help shape this game?

Yes. They will be listed in Special Thanks. Authors of some famous technical and historical books are in constant contact with us.

Was the game engine already in existence, or was it specifically designed for this title?

The first version of game engine was designed for space and ground simulators of future wars. But then the development decided to choose to model completely real planes and very realistic modeling of action on the ground.

Will IL-2 have an online component at all?

Yes. There are several modes, including dedicated and player's home server hosting. We've accumulated experience of FPS-style online gameplay as well as experience of online simulators, so we will see elements of both those genres, which make them popular for the games' massive online communities.

Through what site?

The main dedicated IL-2 servers will be hosted by Ubi Soft and using online Game Service tools of Ubi Soft.

Will the player find a community of IL-2 gamers on this site?

Yes, of course. It will be the main location for players to meet each other to arrange virtual battles.

Do you know yet what the minimum likely computer to run IL-2 is going to be?

Starting level will be PII400, 128 MB RAM, TNT2 or Voodoo 3 video card.

The Gameplay / the Design:

Are designs in the game strongly representative of the designer?

Yes. And also many additions have been implemented following suggestions from the sim community!

Have you been inspired by other games, pictures or movies?

Yes. EAW, then WWIIF and … Quake and Unreal! J

Besides the game being fun and enjoyable, what design element or elements are of primary importance in developing this title?

User-friendly design of the interface. All the features are easy to use and don't obstruct enjoyment and exploration of the game itself.

Is there a part of the game to which you attached great importance, e.g. music, gameplay, graphics, etc.?

An easy-to-use Mission Builder which allows gamers to make a great amount of new missions including missions for online cooperative gameplay. Real pilots found the flight model very close to the real thing!

Sim community fans will get the next generation of flight model quality with IL-2 Sturmovik. Graphics was one of the first goals of this sim - they are the best possible with current and near feature graphics accelerators and processors. It's easy to say that our graphics should be like the picture you see in photos … and that you will enjoy seeing it more and more, like your favorite movie….

What elements of the design will be innovative in IL-2 and make a difference compared to other flight simulation games ?

Online play
The Mission builder's advanced features
Advanced technology -- at least we will try to get it in the final version! J

Did you precisely design the planes as they were during WWII?

Yes. - it was one of the main goals. Players will get super-detailed models of planes, including 3D cockpits, looking absolutely realistic (gamers can simply compare them to historical docs and photos for proof!).

Have you used feedback from historians or aircraft manufacturers to help shape the plane modeling?

From historians - yes. From modern aircraft constructors - no (except from specialists in some specific areas). There are several aviation engineers in our team, which is enough!

How long, roughly is the game?

I think this game will offer gameplay of at least 1 to 1.5 years! There are more than 150 single-play missions (not including different scenario branches!). The Quick Mission builder allows player to build easily more than 100,000 mission variations …

How is the localization being handled?

Russian, English, French and German languages at least.

Others :

Do you know what will be the future of “IL-2” ? Add-ons? Free stuff?

- Third party add-ons (with our help or control) will be freely available and downloadable, and perhaps we will release some commercial add-on and expansion packs …

It's possible that there will be an increasing amount of new aircraft, vehicles, etc, that will be created and included to increase single-player and multiplayer gameplay. Also new battle scenarios, maps, etc - the list is endless and varied!

What element(s) of the game are you most proud of?

The flight modeling, AI, physics, graphics, gameplay, historically accurate planes, cockpits and vehicles -- to begin with …

Can players hope to see you playing online? If yes, what will your pseudonym be?

Yes! Look out for MAD or MADdox! J

Oleg, any special thoughts to add?

I want to say thanks to the sim community for the great support and REAL HELP. We are always in contact with fans and enthusiasts, and I'm glad to say that we satisfied 98 percent of their requests - maybe 99 percent …
